Do all TRICARE coverages include a breast pump benefit?

TRICARE is available worldwide and managed in three separate regions: TRICARE West, TRICARE East, and TRICARE Overseas. Each region has its own regional contractors. If you’re a military mom living in the eastern region of the U.S., your breast pump is covered by TRICARE East or Humana Military. If you’re a service member or family of a service member in the western region of the U.S., your breast pump is covered by TRICARE West or Health Net Federal Services. If you’re stationed anywhere overseas, your pump is covered by TRICARE Overseas or International SOS. In fact, all TRICARE plans include coverage for nursing moms, including TRICARE Prime, TRICARE Select, the US Family Health Plan, and TRICARE Reserve Select.

Who is eligible for Tricare breast pump coverage?

TRICARE East, TRICARE West, and TRICARE Overseas as well as their regional contractors all cover any TRICARE-eligible female who is pregnant, who has given birth, or who has legally adopted a child and intends to breastfeed. Coverage is guaranteed whether you or your sponsor is active duty, retired, or in the Guard or Reserves.

What breast pump brands does Tricare cover?

While your prescription must specify manual or standard electric pump, neither TRICARE nor any of its regional contractors such as TRICARE East, TRICARE West, and TRICARE Overseas require you to specify a particular brand, model, or style. You may choose whichever breast pump works best for your circumstances.

How do I get my Tricare-covered breast pump?

Ask your TRICARE-authorized doctor, physician assistant, nurse practitioner, or nurse midwife to provide a prescription with a diagnosis code. From there, you can pick the best breast pump for your circumstances, whether that’s a portable pump like the Elvie Stride or a more traditional model like the Spectra.

What breastfeeding equipment does Tricare cover?

All new moms who are TRICARE-eligible are authorized one manual or standard electric breast pump per birth or adoption. If your infant is in NICU or is unable to breastfeed for medical reasons, TRICARE will cover an electric hospital-grade breast pump and supplies.
In addition to breast pumps, TRICARE covers some nursing supplies for 36 months after your child’s birth or adoption, including:

  • Standard power adapters
  • Tubing and tubing adaptors
  • Locking rings
  • Bottles and bottle caps
  • Shield/splash protectors
  • Storage bags
  • One breast pump kit per birth event
